Running U-Compare
U-Compare is a Java Web Start application and so does not have to be explicitly installed before use. The only requirement is that your computer has version 6 or above of the Java Runtime Environment installed. If you are unsure if your computer has Java installed or not, or would like instructions on how to install the latest version please see the java instalation guide on the U-Compare website.
Assuming Java is installed, launching U-Compare is simple. Normally you would just need to click the ``Start U-Compare'' on the Launch U-Compare section of the website. But for convenience, you can just click the button below:
Clicking either button will start U-Compare loading. After a few seconds your browser will open a dialog stating that ``The applications digital signature cannot be verified'' and asking if you still want to run it. The exact options offered by the dialog will differ depending on which browser you use, but please select the option giving U-Compare permission to ``Run''.
U-Compare will now finish downloading the necessary files, which may take several minutes to complete the first time U-Compare is run. U-Compare saves all settings and history files in a folder named "U-Compare" in the current users home directory, while downloaded components are stored by Java Web Start. It is important that the user has read/write access to their homedirectory so the "U-Compare" directory can be created.
As these are the only locations U-Compare will make changes to on your system, deleting the U-Compare directory and the Java Web Start cache at any time will effectively uninstall U-Compare from your system. Deleting just the U-Compare directory will restore U-Compare to its original configuration without the need to redownload components (This will delete saved data however).
